Senior Backend Engineer (Python)

Besample is a data marketplace helping researchers access diverse, global participant pools—especially beyond the Western world. They are on a mission to make behavioral sciences truly diverse and globally representative. It as an early-stage startup (pre-seed funding raised !) headquartered in NYC with early traction: 750+ customers across 55 top research hubs.

• Get your hands dirty by examining the entire product closely, then share your vision of how to improve it.
• Perform an audit on the current state of the product and infrastructure to make recommendations on where we can make informed decisions on improvements
• Help us improve Besample by rebuilding the backend architecture, shipping product features and flows, fixing bugs, and removing technical debt.
• Own the technical roadmap and development priorities while communicating any roadblocks or challenges.
• Develop systems for high-volume traffic and data processing
• Work closely with customers to prioritise feature development
• Build tools to accelerate both individual and team workflows, but only when off-the-shelf solutions won’t do - need an eye for detail

• Make recommendations for building upon and transforming the current stack:

  • Backend- Dockerized Python APIs on DigitalOcean Ap
  • Frontend- Bubble.io
  • Database- PostgreSQL
  • Automations & Pipelines: n8n.io
• For now, this will be an engineering team of two, but there is potential to help scale the team in the future

• You care about the mission behind it and want to contribute to something big and important.
• You focus on details without losing sight of the bigger picture.
• You drive things forward with little or no oversight, yet you’re a team player and keep an open line of communication
• You have 5+ years of work experience in backend or full-stack development (although we know great early-stage engineering can come from a variety of backgrounds, so if something on your CV is not exactly there, we’re still open to a conversation!)
• Experience with marketplace and / or fintech background is an advantage (though not a requirement)
• Nice to have expertise in anti-fraud and KYC (know your customer) software solutions
• Proficiency in programming languages, mainly Python and JS
• Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles
• Familiarity with AI and ML concepts
• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure, etc)
• Willingness to tolerate no/low-code and imperfect past code without scepticism or disdain 🙂
• Experience in startup environments, either as a founder or an early-stage engineer is an advantage.
